Welcome to 2022. It is a new year, which brings a new perspective and a chance to alter the rest of your life. Many of us make resolutions as we start the new year. Unfortunately, we don’t often keep them.
Here are a few suggestions that will help you keep and maintain those objectives.
1. Make your resolution achievable.
It may not be possible to achieve muscles like a bodybuilder or have a model-thin figure. It is possible to go the gym regularly or lose a certain amount of weight.
Keep your resolution within reach. If you can, cut your objective into smaller portions – such as lose 5 pounds a month or go to the gym three times a week. Don’t make it so that it may be impossible to achieve.
And if you do go off track, don’t beat yourself up. Just get back into doing those things that you resolved to do.
2. Reward yourself periodically.
When you have achieved a certain milestone — you paid off one of your credit cards if that is your financial resolution — then splurge a little. Do something fun but inexpensive. Take a long walk in the woods. Enjoy some “me” time if you can.
The idea is to have certain points during your progress that brings you joy and motivates you to keep going.
3. Tell someone your resolution.
When we say what we want to accomplish out loud, it motivates us more. When we tell someone else, we feel an obligation to go through with it.
It may be especially helpful if you tell someone who can keep you on track and gently nudge you back when you veer off your chosen path. Having a resolution “buddy” may make the difference.
4. Track your progress.
It is important to note where you were and how far you have come. Without this perspective, your goal may always seem to be eluding you. By seeing the difference between where you started and where you currently are, you can judge how much of your goal has been achieved or how quickly your goal can be completed, or it can even make you more determined to speed up the process.
However, no matter the circumstance, make sure you keep within an achievable time period. Take the time to develop a habit, not just a goal.
5. Stay positive.
A positive outlook can make any goal a life-affirming act. Keep your mind on the target and don’t focus on any setbacks you may encounter. If you veer off-track, just resolve to get back to the task at hand and keep moving forward.
The idea of resolutions is to start the new year with a fresh perspective. May your new year be filled with all good things.
